Penguin Book cover
As part of the Penguin Book Awards 2022 I decided to design the book cover for the adult fiction book: Girl, Woman, Other. This involved creating a wide scope of initial ideas through to the final critical feedback on the project before final submission.
The insight
After reading the book and highlighting the key themes within the copy, I decided to create a theatre ticket as the central event in the book is the final play.
I created many different tickets to reflect different visual languages, however this meant I had to conduct further research into the period the book was set in to ensure the ticket looked appropriate.
Photography
I decided to experiment with different models, poses and backgrounds when photographing to enhance the cover design. I also experimented with the nail colouration to highlight the theme of gender in the book and the background to help the core focus (the ticket) stand out.
I used the hand as in a pose of strength to reflect the empowerment of the book.
Texture is key
To enhance the book cover design I made sure to use texture in both the ticket and background. I therefore made the information on the reverse of the book a stubbed ticket with tears and rips.
Whilst the overall background was given a striking yellow colour, like that of a ticket.
